Charged by a love of 80s college rock and microwavable dinners, the Canoes began as an agoraphobic basement project based in Evanston, Illinois. Their songs are about people who rarely win: those who?ve loved and lost, who are searching to be saved; parents too drunk to care, but too caring to let go; prodigal sons coming home to watch the world pass by on a hand-me-down futon?waiting to get over their fear of crowds, sober up, and regain what was once theirs.
The Canoes were named after a long-forgotten dream to canoe the Chicago River. But the Chicago River has no beginning or end, and so cannot be canoed?at least not in its entirety; it can only be dredged and toured on big, safe riverboats. The Canoes still have dreams?not the kind you forget, but the kind you can?t remember.
